Central Tableau - Pershore at War

The third part of the tableau is a tribute to the RAF. It includes a manikin in uniform as a token of respect for the importance of the two aerodromes in the Pershore area, Defford and Tilesford. There are posters reflecting the War as well as maps, one taken by the Germans in the War, suggesting that they knew only too well where our planes were based.

First Floor Rooms, (War Room) Displays & Facilities

Central Tableau - Women’s Land Army

A comprehensive history of Land Army girls in Pershore. Compete with articles and photographs. There is, also, memorabilia of that time and several garments reflecting that period. It is not surprising that many ex-Land Army Girls have recognised themselves and added several stories to the collection. There is, also, some memorabilia and garments linked with the work of the WVS.

Central Tableau - Women at War

This is a miscellaneous section, with a focus on the ATS, but also Army material. There is the Bedford Lifeboat Case, presented to the Centre by the Bedford Family. In addition, there is the Bedford Family History, a valuable research text. Oh! and a 1930’s Anaesthetic Unit.

Bookcase & Table

Bookcase containing research by local authors, Janet Daniels and Marion Freeman. This includes research on several of the larger houses in the town; a detailed study of pubs in the town, which resulted in a book by Janet; and extracts on the lives of more famous individuals in Pershore’s past. The table has a number of periodicals, which are available for study.

Cabinet & Drawers (1)

Articles taken from the excavation of No. 8 which includes medieval finds.

There is also local memorabilia on show in the cabinet.

The Drawers include periodicals like programmes of the Pershore Flower Show and local magazines.

Cabinet & Drawers (2)

This new cabinet will be in use by the Spring and will include valuable items such as medals and small valuable objects loaned to the Centre.

Cabinet & Drawers (3)

This display is mainly based on smaller examples of what life was like in the War Years. It includes ration books, identity cards etc. and should take older visitors back in time.On the top, there is a collection of photographs from that period, some with requests for visitors to identify people on them, and correct mistakes made by others. We would love to have more of this sort of reflection of life in Pershore some 50 years ago.The Drawers contain larger items, such as photographs and maps.

Display: Royal Navy & HMS Scimitar

With a manikin in full naval uniform and a great deal of memorabilia linked with the ship which Pershore sponsored and closely identified with in the 1939-45 War.  This isa very proud relationship, one where links have been maintained with members of the crew. This link with the Navy is reinforced through the Naval Association in the town.

Wall Display - Wellington Crash

This excellent piece of research has been collated by Colin Perry and covers the tragic crash during a Wings for Victory celebration in Pershore in 1943. The whole town was out, many in the Abbey Grounds, when this Wellington bomber went out of control. This painstaking research includes evidence from the War Ministry and newspaper articles at the time and eye witness accounts of the events. It is remarkable how our memories play tricks with us.

Wall Display - Men at War

This is a second piece of research by the same person, in this case a collection of photographs and comments on men from Pershore, who fought in the Boer and First World War. There is a book on this subject on the adjacent shelf, but we would welcome photographs and information about other war veterans, from the town.
